On the Stanford campus there's a sculpture by Kenneth Snelson called Mozart I. It's a tensigrity structure. Steel tubes hold each other in air with a network of cables under tension. If one cable was shortened, the entire structure would distort. The position and orientation of every tube would change. The structure of the body is a bit like that.
